Ranking hacks are nothing new to Amazon sellers. As you probably know already, the current, and the most effective hack is the Search Find Buy method.

Previously used ranking hacks have mostly fallen away, as Amazon has become more sophisticated in picking up the tricks Amazon sellers use to reach the top of the search results.

While the most effective way to rank your products is simply to build an optimized listing and give customers a product that they’re going to be very satisfied with, hacks like these can be massively beneficial by giving you a leg up in competitive search categories.

Amazon sellers have always found ways to manipulate their listings to be favored in the search results.

However, ranking hacks are often changing, as Amazon is continually working to shut down popular hacks.

Extreme tricks, like the click farms and fake reviews, are clearly against TOS, and will often get you banned. However, less extreme tricks including Search Find Buy are unlikely to get you in trouble – unless it appears unnatural where there is an extremely high volume of sales for the keyword that you’re targeting, or the shopper doesn’t spend enough time on the listing.

Here are a few other ranking hacks that came before SFB:

Previously on Amazon, it used to be simple to rank, by filling your product listing with keywords, to appease the algorithm.

Today, however, the Amazon search algorithm is far too complex to be fooled so easily. By overinflating your keyword density, your rankings are likely to drop. Worse again, you’ll just lose out on sales from people who do make it to your listing because overuse of keywords will hurt your sales copy.

2021 update:
don’t do this. Overuse of keywords won’t increase your rank, especially in competitive categories. In fact, keyword stuffing, and thus poor listing copy will probably hurt your rankings, as this is likely to decrease your conversion rate, which is a huge ranking factor.

:point_right:SUPER URLs:
Around the years between 2016-2017, sellers started using super URLs to rank. These types of URLs would mimic the Amazon URL structure, by directing ranking power towards particular keywords.

This is important as you want Amazon to see your product as a popular choice for specific search terms with a lot of search volume. Ranking your products for these keywords will result in more organic sales.

Most super URLs don’t work much anymore, because Amazon is able to detect these and disregard the keywords when it comes to ranking.

2021 update:
not useful anymore. All but the most sophisticated super URLs are recently detectable by Amazon, who will either suspend your listing for using them or disregard these sales for ranking purposes.

:point_right:2-STEP URLs:

2-step URLs are the latest solution to super URLs losing effectiveness. The concept is the same – to show Amazon you have a lot of sales for a particular keyword, this Amazon will rank you high for that keyword.

The difference however with 2-step URLs, is that you send people to a search page, with your keyword filled out. When they click thru to your product, this is a unique click each time, with a unique timestamp. Thus Amazon doesn’t pick up on this the same way they do with super URLs.

2-step URLs are indeed still effective in 2021. However, though, some people report they don’t carry as much weight for ranking, and there are sometimes issues where products don’t show up correctly in search results.

2021 update:
appear to still work fairly well. There is however a question over whether they still carry as much weight for ranking, and some sellers have actually reported issues with products not appearing to be indexed on 2-step search pages.

:point_right:Search Find Buy (SFB) What is it?

Search Find Buy (SFB) is a very powerful way to rank your Amazon products for high-value keywords. SFB is a method to direct people to buy your products through specific keywords while increasing your rank for these keywords by simulating an organic sale.

Search Find Buy works a lot like a 2-step URL. It gives an organic, natural-looking click-through from the search term you want to rank for.

It’s designed to get the customer to search, find and buy the product, as if they went to Amazon, and searched for a keyword, then found your product naturally.

In comparison to sending a potential customer to your product directly, this is far more powerful if your goal is to rank for a certain keyword.

By sending a shopper through a direct link, the scale won’t be attributed to one keyword in particular. However, using Search Find Buy, Amazon sees that the customer searched for that particular keyword and bought your product, and thus ranks your product higher as a result.

How to Use SFB to Rank Your Products?
This is how to utilize Search Find Buy properly, and start ranking higher.

First, you need to get shoppers into your SFB funnel. This usually comes from FB Ads, Google Ads, or an email blast - if you have an email list.

In your ad, your landing page, or your ManyChat flow, you offer your customer a generous discount for buying your product. You can do this without a discount, but you’ll have far fewer people willing to go and find your product and buy it.

When you give the link, you’ll usually send your customers to the Amazon search page with the search term already filled out, and then give them instructions on how to find your product - main image, title, reviews, star rating, and price.

Customers will then find your product, redeem the promotion, and buy your product.

It’s good to track your results here, in terms of how many people reached your landing page or ManyChat flow, how many of them clicked the SFB link, how many went on to buy the product, and also the changes in rank for your target keyword.

By tracking these results, you’ll be able to tell whether your Search Find Buy campaign was successful, or whether you may be better off trying a different method.

Here are some tips to help you run SFB effectively.

:heavy_check_mark: BEST TRAFFIC SOURCE:

The first step is where you get your actual traffic from. The most effective ways to drive traffic are from FB Ads, Google Ads, organic social media, or your email list.

Email traffic is considered the cheapest and most effective way out there. That’s why you should make sure to put the effort into building your email list.

To do this:

  1. Create a promotional landing page that requires the visitor to give you their email address to receive the coupon code

  2. Give away high-quality content such as beautifully designed PDF ebooks, printable calendars, kids activity pages, charts, planner pages…

To advertise these promos:
:point_right:run Facebook ads to your registration/sign up page and use the right targeting to attract your ideal customer
:point_right:Post the link to your registration/sign up page in your social media profiles
:point_right:Create social media content about your new asset and use hashtags so it gets seen by the right audience

Organic social media is pretty much the same. Pages don’t have much reach with regular posts recently, but if you’re able to build a community, like with a Facebook group, these can be a great way to get your promo in front of people for little to no cost.

On the other hand, FB allows you to scale much further, and reach a lot more new customers. Although It can be expensive when you’re first starting out.

Google Ads are many times a forgotten ad platform for Amazon sellers. They have so much potential to bring in a lot of additional sales, mostly thru people searching for your keywords in Google search. Although, their suitability for SFB campaigns is questionable, as you want more of a promotional platform, like FB.

Your incentive really is a vital part of Search Find Buy, why?
Because you need some sort of way to convince customers to go thru the extra steps required to find your product.

If you don’t offer a discount, it’s very unlikely that shoppers will go and find your product among all the others in the search results. They’ll more than likely click on the product that’s ranking higher than you, and that just ends up driving more sales to your competitors.

SFB is often used together with 100% rebates - refund after purchase. This gives a really good reason for someone to find and buy your product, instead of your competitors.

Otherwise, you can alternatively use a discount code. Just be aware though that a discount too low may not be a good enough incentive, and a discount too high - above ~70% off, may not carry much weight for ranking.

Even with a discount on the line, there’s a limit to how many initiative customers will take to find your product.

If your SFB is like finding a needle in a haystack, your potential customers will forget it and move on. Make your instructions are very clear. Provide the main image, title, reviews, and current price for your product. Make sure it’s updated once or twice daily, in case your pricing changes.

Only do SFB if your product is within the first 3 pages for the keyword you’re targeting. Otherwise, it’s just going to take far too long for customers to find it, and hence your purchase rate will be too low.

If your product is lower than this, it’s best that you try the 2-step URLs instead, until you’re ranking a little higher. Alternatively, you could send shoppers through a regular link to the product page, until you have a little more traction.

Are There Any Downsides to SFB?
SFB is a powerful way to rank for keywords, but there are indeed some downsides.

First, it can be very expensive, since you have to incentivize people to search and find your product. If you don’t have much budget to give a lot of discounts or rebates, consider a different method. Also, you’d better make sure the keyword you’re going after is worth the amount you spend. If the keyword you’re targeting doesn’t have enough search volume, it may not be worthwhile.

Finally, you’ve got to expect some decrease in conversions with SFB. You may want to test a couple of different funnels, one with SFB and then one without. Observe how many clicks & sales you get with each, including the impact on your rankings, to see if SFB is worth it. You can check this on H10.

How to Start Using Search Find Buy?

The best way to start using Search Find Buy in your Amazon ranking strategy is by using a link shortener that features Search Find Buy -as well as various types of 2-step URLs.
Just put in your product URL, and it’ll generate a Search Find Buy link, which gives your customer instructions and up-to-date product info.
You can track and manage your SFB links from within your analytics dashboard.
